Wild Horses Couldn't Drag Him Away

(We apologize for the awful title of this post.)

Well we followed the live blogging of todays iPod event just like you and here a few quick thoughts.

-iTunes 9 We were hoping for a big redesign with lots of social networking features and maybe a subscription service, instead we got some new Genius features and digital LP's. Sharing content across multiple computers in a household looks great, but somehow he think this is still to confusing for the average family. We're still shocked Apple is allowing sharing of paid apps.

-More Games Phil the Schill is unleashed and goes on the attack after Sony and Nintendo, pointing out the cost of games and poor buying experiences for those platforms. We might agree on cost, but poor buying experience? Maybe Phil just finds Best Buy too low brow. Sure Apple has thousands of titles more than the competition, but no mention of quality is made. Also please don't showcase Gameloft next time. They only exist by ripping of other developers properties.

-New iPods Everyone gets an update, even the Classic. New Nano looks gorgeous and will probably be the big seller this winter. We do think it's odd that it now has a video camera and the iPod Touch does not.

All in all the announcements seems rather tame. The big story of the show will definitely be the return of Steve. We'll give today a solid B.

What do you have to say?

Sega Dreamcast 10 Years Young

Oh what could have been. If only Sega hadn't burned it's customers with past gaming failures like the Saturn and 32X. If only consumers didn't buy into the marketing hype of the coming PS2.

Anyways, next time you line up for a consumer electronic launch event, remember Sega did it first with the Dreamcast 9-9-99

Oh yeah, that whole white plastics thing......also first.

Where's the Love, Bono?

Our friends from atu2.com just got the scoop on the new U2 / RIM Blackberry collaboration. Blackberry will soon be introducing something called the U2 Mobile Album. The application will let fans get the latest tour news, listen to music, watch video and share photos.

You may remember Bono stating they switched to RIM due to Apple's unwillingness to grant them "access to their labs and people." Well despite being huge U2 fans, we're just not buying that. This Blackberry app doesn't appear to do anything more than what Trent Reznor is offering with his NIN app available on iTunes right now. We think U2 was looking for a tour sponsor and Apple was unwilling to part with the money, and now fans are stuck using a boring Blackberry instead of a sexy iPhone 3GS.

Bono, next time leave the technology decisions to The Edge.

A few Microsoft E3 ditties

As the internet explodes with fanboy anger over Microsoft's latest E3 coup, we have some thoughts on their lesser debated announcements.

-Full Xbox 360 game downloads coming in August. This along with the new UMD-less PSP and dare we say the iPhone App Store is changing the way we acquire our games. It was nice knowing ya GameStop. Say hi to Tower Records for us at Chapter 11 court.

-Minor update to Netflix. No longer do you need your Mac or PC to update your movie que. Updating is now available from the Xbox dashboard. We say yea to this. Movie subscriptions for the win. Owning content is soooo 2005

-Facebook and Twitter integration. Maybe Microsoft's $250 million Facebook investment is finally paying off. On one hand we think the integration will be a great way for 360 users to meet and play with new people. On the other hand it's another way of Facebook taking over our lives. The Twitter integration is what you'd expect, Twitter on your Xbox and we just don't "get" Twitter.

-Zune Marketplace hits the 360 this fall. All video (and we think music) will be available on the 360 dashboard. Oh yeah, it's 1080p instant on streamed video too. Is BluRay now the new laser disc? Does this force Apple to do something serious with Apple TV?

Return of the Pippin?

Maybe some of you have seen the latest rumors involving Apple purchasing either Twitter or EA.

You probably think there is no way Apple is going to spend $700 million on a (fad) like Twitter or $10 billion on EA. Maybe you agree with Wedbush Morgan analyst Michael Pachter that Apple would be better off spending $3 billion to acquire Warner Music and its 20 percent of all recorded music.

But judging by Apple's latest moves, there is no denying something big is in the works.

-Hiring Richard Teversham from Microsoft's Xbox business
-Hiring Bob Drebin, chief technologist at AMD's graphics group and creator of the Nintendo Gamecube's graphics processor.
-Hiring chip designer Mark Papermaster as head of Apple's iPod business from IBM.
- Purchased 3.6% of U.K.-based ImagInation, licensing its PowerVR graphics technology.
- Last year Apple purchased processor designer PA Semi for $378 million

Dare we dream of an Apple game console?!?
