Wednesday Website of The Week: VolunteerMatch.org

(In keeping with the spirit of the holidays we're dedicating our weekly WWW to great sites/causes for the month of December.)

Who isn't a little short on cash these days? But we still all have the same 24 hours in the day. And while it can seem that our own schedules could make volunteering for non-profits difficult, this week's website of the week certainly makes it easier.

VolunteerMatch.org does just what its name implies: it works as a clearinghouse, allowing you to find the perfect volunteer opportunity for you, in a fraction of the time of trying to hunt one down via the newspaper, word of mouth, etc. A quick local search (no login needed to search) brought back a wide range of opportunities from nationwide organizations like the Red Cross, to local library opportunities. Big and small opportunities await!

Wednesday Website of the Week: nuruInternational.org

(In keeping with the spirit of the holidays we're dedicating our weekly WWW to great sites/causes for the month of December.)

Imagine seeing the horrors of war in Iraq as a Marine, then deciding to help rid the world of violence by exterminating extreme poverty. That's what Jake Harriman did when he started Nuru. Last month Loop Insight had a great profile of Nuru, so I won't tell the whole story here again, especially when this video gives you the basic and noble goals behind the project:

Wednesday Website of the Week: MyTweet16.com

Oh, Twitter... First we mocked you, then we joined you. Like so many others we sat out your humble early days. But of course some people were there from day one. So if you want to see the first 16 tweets from your favorite twitterer, now you can (Might we suggest @tdllive ). MyTweet16.com shows you the first 16 tweets from the twitter username of your choice.

So take a walk down memory lane, and see tweets that are over a YEAR old! that's ages in internet time.

Wednesday Website of the Week: GarfieldMinusGarfield.net

I've never been a huge fan of the Garfield comic strip (sorry Jim Davis). Sure it would be mildly entertaining on occasion, but I just couldn't get into Garfield's love of lasagna, and his cat foibles. Little did I know that a comic strip with a far more manic, and to me, entertaining comic was lurking just under the surface.

Now thanks to Dan Walsh, that second comic strip is brought to light at GarfieldMinusGarfield.net. Walsh takes Davis' strips, removes Garfield, and we're left with a dark look at the mind of Garfield's owner, Jon. The modified strips have been so successful, there's even a book. And Garfield creator Jim Davis has given his blessing, which gives me a great deal of respect for him.

Even if you've never been a fan of Garfield, you might just enjoy Garfield Minus Garfield.

Wednesday Website of the Week: PlaidStallions.com

It's Wednesday, and here at The Digital Lifestyle, that can only mean one thing (well, at least since we started doing this last week.)  It's time for the Wednesday Website of the Week. For the WWW this time around, we're climbing in a time machine. No flux capacitor needed as we're headed straight to the catalog pages of the 70's thanks to PlaidStallions.com

If you were a child of the 70's, this is the site for you. From the 1976 G.I. Joe catalog, to user-submitted photos of awkward superhero mall appearances, all the toy fun of the decade is lovingly captured.

So open a new window, and head to the world that time forgot, but that will live on in wacky action figures for years to come: PlaidStallions.com
