When is an Error Message Not an Error Message?

I decided to kick off the new year in style. And by style, I mean by repairing permissions. Talk about a party! The only thing was, I saw a new cryptic message: Warning: SUID file "/System/Library/CoreServices/RemoteManagement/ARDAgent.app/Contents/MacOS/ARDAgent" has been modified and will not be repaired.

Uh-oh. This can't be good. Well it turns out, at least according to Apple, there's nothing to see here. In an support article titled "Mac OS X: Disk Utility's Repair Permissions messages that you can safely ignore," the error I received, along with over 50 other errors that can be ignored. I know Apple wants to keep things simple, but it might be nice to give a little more of an explanation as to why these errors crop up in Disk Utility, and why they can be ignored.

The same article also cryptically advises: You can also usually ignore any "ACL found but not expected..." message. These messages can occur if you change permissions on a file or directory. These messages are accurate but are generally not a cause for concern.

And my personal favorite, you can ignore "any messages that contains the word 'WebObjects'."

So if you see the message "All data has been deleted. Your computer will now stop functioning. WebObjects." Rest assured everything is fine.

Woz Appears in Local Toyota Commercial: We Still Love Him

Who but Steve Wozniak could appear in one of those ridiculous local car ads, and leave us smiling, and with his dignity still intact. Sure, there's a Segway in there too, but we don't want to ruin all the fun, just enjoy!

Thanks to @CapnWiley for the great find!

We Visit MySpace So You Don't Have To

Facebook, twitter, friendfeed, linkedin... It seems many of us have moved on from one time friend (or at least acquaintance) myspace. So we decided to dust off our login info and see what's new, so you don't have to:

Colored lines are all the rage. Each section is now topped by a colored line when you login to your profile. Not a coherent color, mind you; rather some are yellow/maize some are purple/pink, and others are blue.

Speaking of sections, there are some new names for newish sections. And we just can't figure out where they came up with these... hmmm... "Stream" (think news feed in facebook) "Virtual Gifts" (think gifts in Facebook) Artist on Artist (think Ads), and my Apps (seeing a pattern?)

An old marketing professor once told me, you don't beat someone else by being somebody else: you have to be yourself. It looks like that might have gone out the window as myspace tries to more or less clone facebook, except with terrible self-designed backgrounds.

It's also interesting to see my personal friends count has dropped 40%. Not due to any malice on my part (I hope) but rather from people simply deciding to delete their accounts since they're not logging in anymore anyhow.

Don't get cocky Facebook: We fully expect to look back and laugh at you in a few more years too...

We're Optimizing For The New Apple Tablet Too!

We optimized for this too...Everyone's a little bummed around TDL HQ today. Why? Because Wired beat us to the punch. Yes, it's been reported that Wired is optimizing its content for the not-yet-released Apple tablet. Why does this bother us, you ask? Because we're doing the same thing.

Our sources indicate the Apple tablet will be able to browse the internet. As a result, quite some time ago we made the decision to make our webpages available via the internet. Another insider claims the device will be able to render colors. Again, we made the decision quite some time ago to post our pages in color rather than black and white, with the knowledge this would allow our content to be seen on the groundbreaking, yet-to-be-seen, nobody knows what it is device.

I have to be careful with the NDAs here, but let's just say we have credible evidence this device might even playback audio and video. Hey, you didn't think we created a video channel of Apple news, reviews, and lifestyle, just for the stale old internet, did you?

So I'm rallying the troops, and telling them to hold their heads high. After all, just wait until you see what we have in store for Safari 5. In the meantime, let's stop talking about the damn tablet, okay?

The Third Coming of Steve Jobs: The T-Shirt

With sightings on Apple's Campus, and quotes attributed to him in press releases, we feel confident in saying Steve Jobs is back. And so we herald the Third Coming of Steve Jobs. Of course he founded Apple before being defrocked and sent to the NeXT forest, then came back to oversee the original iMac/iBook, and now, not even a mighty foe can stop him from returning once again.

And how does one commemorate this occasion? With a t-shirt, of course. Click here to get yours. You can customize in different colors, for men, women, or kids. And Apple employees, we have it on good authority that Steve would love to see these in the halls of Cupertino...
