Microsoft (Finally) Takes The Gloves Off

It really seemed like Microsoft was wandering in the woods looking for an effective ad campaign to pit against Apple. First we had those horrible Seinfeld ads, then up next was the "I'm a PC" campaign. It's still running, but it's days might be numbered. Microsoft is going for the Apple jugular: user perceptions that the Mac is more expensive.

Sure there are a dozen scenarios in which the computer "Lauren" wants could possibly be cheaper from Apple, but by having her look for a 17" screen, it was already painfully obvious how this would end.

I say kudos to Microsoft for finally creating an ad that will at least be on Apple's radar. We're fans of competition, and if Mac users get better/faster computers as a result, great. Check out the ad:

It's an interesting ad. On one hand the computer she got is a POS, and outclassed by the $1000 white Macbook. On the other hand if you really want a 17 inch notebook for emailing and web surfing, the HP is probably serviceable...provided you can deal with installing virus/spyware protection.

I think the add will have the net effect of strengthening Apple's brand name (if she had the money, she'd get a mac) and weakening Microsoft's brand name (she gets the HP because it's cheap (operating system doesn't matter -- next step: Linux).

@Bruce - yeah Linux I can see that happening for your average user ;-)

I think it's too little too late. I used to be the sole Mac user amidst my friends, my wife's family clan, and, my own relatives. Every one of them are in the midst of converting or have converted. Mac evangelism used to be my overtime job at a party or reunion. Funny thing now, they talk about how much they love their Mac and I could give a crap. Duh. Game Over.

Why wouldn't she be happy? They bought her a computer. I would be smiling too. Cut to her at home using vista. Is she still smiling?
