Macgirl's Media Pick of the Week: Star Trek (2009)
I had a long list for Santa this holiday season. One of the few movie choices I hoped for was Star Trek. This film is so much fun. The acting is fresh (especially Spock) and it has a great overall style and feel. Although different from the classic Trek I loved growing up, JJ Abrams managed to bridge the divide between new and old fans in this film.
I really enjoyed it in the theaters, and hoped it would translate to the small screen.
My early reaction: yes. Yes it does. And then some. It may be better in some ways. It feels more like it's classic predecessors on my television, like that's where it belongs. I think this is a super fun sci-fi flick. Just don't take it too seriously, and you'll be fine.

I hate to be the Jamie here but ST(2009) has the story line of a half hour television show on the UBN. Yes the Style and feel are great but that where it ends. I do agree the Spock character is refreshing but it was never fully developed. The remaining characters are nothing but stereotactically cardboard 20 something with no real depth or substance. The bottom-line is; this movie is Avitar with a smaller budget. A movie that uses special effects to hide the hole and lack of any real substance. Sorry not worth adding the blu-ray collection.
Gary's comments about the lack of depth to the story and characters may have some merit, but there is just too much good stuff going on here! ST 2009 is one big jolt of energy from start to finish. The dialogue pops off the screen, spat out rapid-fire by actors who seem to be enjoying the hell out of playing these iconic roles. I give a lot of credit to J.J. Abrams for his work here - this is a perfectly paced, breezy and fun movie. There is nothing to ponder or take seriously....you just kind of have to sit back and enjoy. From the moment we saw a young James T. Kirk speeding along that abandoned stretch of highway to the glorious beat of The Beastie Boys' "Sabotage", I knew we were in for a treat. Good pick, Macgirl :)
